Only be very careful and diligently observe the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord has commanded you to love the Lord your God and walk in all His ways and keep His commandments and hold fast to Him and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul [your very life].” So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. – Joshua 22:5-6
Many other scriptures make it clear that keeping God’s commandments is not something we can do by ourselves. As we repent and yield to Jesus Christ, God’s Spirit enables us to allow Jesus Christ to live in us, giving us the desire and capacity to love God and our neighbour.
It is a walk in the Spirit, apart from the flesh (the old nature).
Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior].. . . . so that the [righteous and just] requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not live our lives in the ways of the flesh [guided by worldliness and our sinful nature], but [live our lives] in the ways of the Spirit [guided by His power].Romans 8:1, 4
But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the [a]sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage—our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit]. Galatians 5:16, 25
We believe that the Holy Spirit is God with us. We believe that the Holy Spirit comforts us when we are in need and convicts us when we stray from God. We believe that the Holy Spirit awakens us to God’s will and empowers us to live obediently.
We’re promised a crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. This is a critical doctrine throughout Scripture. Very few people explore what it means to love God, but this is a crucial doctrine, crucial to every aspect, every relationship that we have. If you do not understand the doctrine of the believer’s personal love for God the Father, if you do not assimilate that into your soul and apply that, then you will never be successful in any of your human relationships because this is a foundational doctrine. It is the basis for all motivation in the adult spiritual life.
“The gospel bears my spirit up:
A faithful and unchanging God
Lays the foundation for my hope,
In oaths, and promises, and blood.”
