O Lord, how many and varied are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all;
The earth is full of Your riches and Your creatures.
There is the sea, great and broad,
In which are swarms without number,
Creatures both small and great.
There the ships [of the sea] sail,
And Leviathan [the sea monster], which You have formed to play there.
They all wait for You
To give them their food in its appointed season.
You give it to them, they gather it up;
You open Your hand, they are filled and satisfied with good [things].
You hide Your face, they are dismayed;
You take away their breath, they die
And return to their dust.
You send out Your Spirit, they are created;
You renew the face of the ground.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
May the Lord rejoice and be glad in His works — Psalm 104:24-31
It may be applied to the renewing work of the Spirit of God in the souls of men, by whom they are made new, and by whom they are daily renewed in the Spirit of their minds. And there are particular seasons in which God sends forth his Spirit and renews the face of things in the world, and in his churches; upon the effusion of his Spirit in the first times of the Gospels, there was a new face of things, not only in the land of Judea, but throughout the whole Gentile world, where old things passed away, and all things became new; as in the latter day, when the Spirit shall be poured forth from on high, there will be a renewing of the face of the earth again; it will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea; the kingdoms of it will become Christ’s; new heavens and a new earth will be created, and Jerusalem will be made a rejoicing, and her people a joy, Isaiah 65:17. – Gill’s Exposition
In prayer, take a moment to thank God for the gift of your tongue. Allow him to share with you the proper value and purpose of your tongue. How do you use your tongue when you see that someone is lacking faith, joy, peace, hope, truth, justice, protection, etc.? Is your tongue sometimes passive? Perhaps you may wish to ask God how you can help him to bring about His kingdom by using your tongue more for its true purpose – to speak truth and love to all people. Is there someone who the Holy Spirit is calling you to teach to pray, to share faith with, to speak to about a particular issue that is controversial, etc.? Let us trust that the Holy Spirit never asks us to say something without giving us the words and the power to carry it out.
One of the dimensions of God’s providential care has to do with the work of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that is hovering above the primordial chaos before creation waiting for the Father’s word to begin the work of creation is even now the Father’s partner in bringing blessing to our world. When we pray to God — the Creator and Sustainer of all we know, when we talk about Jesus holding the universe together, we also need to remember this is also the work of the Holy Spirit.
